UPWARD

Ursula’s Place Where Abilities Replaces Disabilities

Rise Through Ability

UPWARD is a nonprofit dedicated to turning disabilities into opportunities by focusing on capabilities, cultivating community, and helping every individual rise with dignity, purpose, and support.

Our facility will provide care and support to newborns to adults. We will provide before and after school care to school age individuals. For individuals who are newborn to kindergarten, we will offer support throughout the day. For those individuals who are 18+, they will learn life skills and job skills, with the opportunity to earn income with an onsite washateria that will provide wash and fold services. All participants will have the opportunity to receive all therapy services on site.

Our mission is to provide care and support to medically diagnosed individuals within the categories of intellectual disabilities, including individuals diagnosed as Autistic (low functioning), developmentally delayed, downs syndrome, and emotionally disabled.

Our Services

A vibrant, multi-textured puzzle piece made of glazed ceramic and tactile silicone overlays, featuring an embossed 'UPWARD' logo, stands upright against a pure white minimalist surface. The piece is illuminated by intense side lighting from the left, casting a bold, crisp shadow that accentuates its dimensional shapes and surfaces. Carefully arranged negative space surrounds the subject, emphasizing unity and versatility. The mood is energetic yet purposeful, with a centered, eye-level composition in sharp photographic focus. The style is minimalist and contemporary, channeling the bold personality of the site and the theme of coming together to rise through ability.

UPWARD offers customized programs including mentorship, adaptive recreation, and employment readiness to empower individuals to pursue goals with confidence and resilience.

A striking, hand-built wooden ramp with a lacquered oak finish and prominent grain patterns curves confidently upward, emerging from a barely-there, light gray background. Strong, raking directional light from the right generates powerful shadows beneath the ramp, bringing out texture and a sense of elevation. The mood is visionary and optimistic, with the ramp’s line leading the eye forward in a bold, clean composition. Shot from a low, front-on angle to enhance the sensation of rising, the image epitomizes the organization’s focus on breaking barriers and celebrating upward mobility, rendered in minimalist, photographic realism.

We tailor inclusive activities, provide access to adaptive technologies, and connect families with supportive networks to ensure every participant can participate fully.

Meet Our Founder: Ursula Patterson

After a decade on the front lines of special education, I founded UPWARD—Ursula’s Place Where Abilities Replace Disabilities—with a singular mission: to look past labels and unlock potential.

My journey began in the classroom, where I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of inclusion. From founding peer mentorship programs like PALS to designing sensory environments for medically fragile students, I have seen that when the right supports are in place, there are no limits to what an individual can achieve. With 10 years of experience as a Special Education Teacher and ARD Specialist, I’ve navigated the complexities of IEPs, behavior interventions, and life-skills instruction, but my true passion lies in the community. UPWARD is the culmination of that passion—a place where we move beyond “compliance” and toward a world where every ability is celebrated.

Ursula possesses a unique 360-degree view of the special education landscape. Her professional portfolio is defined by a commitment to expanding access and visibility for the special education community:

  • Program Innovation & Leadership: Founded the PALS (Peers Assisting thru Leadership and Service) program, a campus initiative designed to foster intentional inclusion and mentorship between neurotypical students and their peers with disabilities.
  • Strategic Resource Development: A proactive advocate for classroom innovation, she successfully secured funding through the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) Grant to design and implement specialized sensory environments for medically fragile students.
  • Full-Spectrum Expertise: Her instructional background spans the entire developmental spectrum, from supporting medically fragile elementary students to coordinating high school and post high school vocational readiness and community-based instruction.
  • Community Mobilization: Spearheaded and organized “Special Kids Day,” a multi-district collaborative field day. By coordinating with high school volunteers, district leadership, and three neighboring campuses, she created a specialized, adaptive athletic event tailored specifically for K-5 students in self-contained settings.

She founded UPWARD to ensure that individuals of all ages have access to quality care, community integration, and the belief that their abilities will always define them more than their disabilities.

“Empowering lives. Strengthening families.”

A minimalistic, matte black tactile sign featuring raised Braille dots and a high-contrast, embossed 'ABILITY' word sits on a seamless, white plinth. The environment is intentionally sparse, with pure white negative space amplifying the sign’s presence. A single directional light from the upper left casts sharp-edged, dramatic shadows, enhancing the tactile texture of both the Braille and embossed lettering. The mood is bold, purposeful, and inclusive, highlighting accessibility in a crisp, centered composition. Photographic realism with a minimalist approach ensures the piece communicates the nonprofit’s commitment to ability-first empowerment.
